AN AMERICAN MILITIA INFANTRY OFFICERS SWORD CIRCA 1840-1860
Narrow 71.1 cm (28 in.) blade with 27.9 cm (11 in.) blued band having small engraved and gilt panels of conventional motifs. Silver-plated brass hilt comprising large shell molded with Federal eagle against a sunburst; downcurving quillon, ferrule molded with foliage, helmet-form pommel, mother-of-pearl grip scales bound with brass wire. Silver-plated scabbard engraved with foliage and fitted with two suspension rings and frog stud. Condition: Blade with some patches of pitting and retaining much blued and gilt finish, now mounted backward and possible an old replacement. Hilt retains nearly all unpolished silver, the knucklebow removed, probably during period of use. Grip scales with some chipping. Scabbard with minor dents.
