Remboitage of blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, center of upper panel stamped with four principales of learning: "Grammer," "Rhetoric," "Arithmetic" and "Dialectica," center of lower panel stamped with depictions of "Music" (double panels) "Geometry" and "Astronomy," 4 brass corner pieces and 2 brass clasps (rebacked in matching pigskin). PROVENANCE: Cornelius J. Hauck Collection (bookplate). Second edition of this remarkable German book on coats-of-arms, displaying the flags of German princes and cities, carried by picturesque warriors of the time. The last 24 of the standard bearers have their flags without coats-of-arms, presumably left blank for later embellishment. The lively woodcut illustrations are by Jacob Köbel.
