A well-known habit of David Burliuk's, in his later years, was to date his works with humorous references to his "futurist" past, such as in the present work. While it is dated tongue-in-cheek by Burliuk "2001," Enigma most likely dates to 1962, when Burliuk and his wife traveled to Australia to exhibit at Moreton Galleries in Brisbane.
