Baron Ernst Friedrich von Liphart was an artist, art collector, and art historian of noble Baltic German extraction. His artistic and professional careers flourished in St. Petersburg, where he was Curator of Paintings at the Hermitage Museum from 1906-1929, and even designed various projects for the court such as the menu for the coronation of Nicholas II. A painting by Baron Ernst von Liphart portraying Nicholas II sold at Stokholms Auktionsverk on December 9, 2005 for $477,000 USD. It was also through Liphart, that the Hermitage bought one of the most famous paintings in its collection, Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna and Child with Flowers in 1914 from Leon Benois, of the Benois artistic family. This large and impressive neoclassical painting by Liphart was painted in 1871, when Liphart was 24 years old and living and painting in Italy.
