LOT NOTES
Born in Solingen, Germany, Albert Bierstadt was brought as an infant to New Bedford, Massachusetts. He studied in Boston, then in Dusseldorf, painted along Rhine and in the Alps. He then returned to America, where he travelled extensively in the West, painting landscapes and Indian scenes. Bierstadt is very well known for his luministic painting of mountains, emphasizing the beauty of wilderness of the nature by often incorporating various ungulates in the landscapes. The present lot depicts a herd of chamois pasturing in Swiss Alps - the scene, probably, captured artist's eye during his four years of study in Germany, when Bierstadt traveled extensively through Europe, sketching and painting with his American friends from the Royal Academy.
