RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CORONATION OF THE VIRGIN OF ORANS WITH SELECTED PROPHETS AND SAINTS IN A GILT SILVER OKLAD, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1886
Chased and repousse, gilt silver oklad and three applied haloes with an open-work cresting rim. A leaf scroll border decorated with revival style motifs, including selected saints, two on each side. The icon Our Lady of the Sign is situated in the center. The Virgin depicted standing with arms raised heavenward and with the Christ Child against her breast. Around them, nine prophets depicted in intricate medallions surrounded by flowers. Above all, God the Father from the heavens crowns Mary through the descending Holy Spirit. Cyrillic maker`s mark of Dmitry Shelaputin, assayer`s marks of Victor Savinkov dated 1886, Moscow town mark, 84 standard. Egg tempera and gesso on a wood panel, two insert splints on the back, 35.6 x 30.2 cm (14 x 11 7/8 in.)
