LOT NOTES
Mentor to Camille Claudel and friend of Auguste Rodin, the sculptor Alfred Boucher's series of "Volubilis" was based on the idea of a beautiful female emerging from a rough and crudely carved rock. Boucher's extraordinarly facility with marble, and carving in three-quarter relief, achieves this effect powerfully, and demonstrates why Boucher was considered to be one of the favorite sculptors of the 19th Century by nobility, academics, and fellow artists.
