the album containting 27 photographs including 25 by Jose Maria Mora (Cuban 1850-1926), in a leather case with a metal applique of cherubs holding a flower garland, the interior inscribed Fancy Ball of the F.C.D.C. / April 15th 1879 / Minnie B. Penniman, each photograph with a handwritten inscription on the verso typically identifying the sitter, each photograph approximately 16.6 x 10.8 cm (6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in.), some photographs without a sleeve; album size: 23.2 x 18.3 cm (9 1/8 x 7 1/4 in.)
This 1879 album containing photographs by Mora showcase the fabulously wealthy, a veritable Whos’ Who of New York high society. The ball was held by the Family Circle Dancing Class and brought together a select group, including Eliza “Lila” Vanderbilt dressed as the Queen of Hearts, Augusta Astor as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and other luminaries of the New York Gilded Age in dazzling and exotic costumes. Amongst those pictured is even Cribb Morgan, a bull dog belonging to the legendary financier’s family.
